Detoxification is a natural process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the human body. Toxins (anything that can potentiate damage to body tissue ) are transformed chemically to less harmful substances, which are then excreted in the stool or urine.

Toxins can come from the normal processes that take place in our body like food intake, such as ammonia produced during the decomposition of proteins, or by inhalation or intake of chemicals such as pesticides, cleaning products, food additives, drugs, pollution, cigarette smoke and heavy metals like lead. Although detox is primarily considered as alcohol and drugs addiction treatment, the term also refers to the diets, herbs and other methods of removing environmental and dietary toxins from the body, with the goal of optimal health.

Detox plans may include a special diet, herbs and supplements, hydrotherapy, exercise, breathing techniques and/or sauna therapy. There are some controversial detox programs, which include, for example, enema. Some detox diets are directed to specific organs such as the liver, kidney, lymphatic system , lungs …

Most experts recommend conducting detox diet once or twice a year to improve health and prevent diseases. Not more than three times a year.

Generally, detox diet is a short-term diet that:

  • minimizes the amount of chemicals intake (such as the use of organic food)
  • emphasizes foods rich in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants, which the body needs for detox
  • contains foods, such as fibers and water, that eliminate toxins by increasing the frequency of digestion and urination

Why do people go on detox diet?

Growing number of studies tell us that many poisons that we daily intake through food, water and air can sediment in fat cells. A diet poor in certain nutrients may also reduce our natural ability of detoxifying harmful substances, which in turn leads to those incorporated in the body.

Toxins in our body lead to disease and hormonal imbalances, poor immune system function, nutritional deficiencies and inefficient metabolism. Signs of this include indigestion, bad breath, fatigue, poor skin, and muscle pain.

The benefits of detox diet

As the results of detox diet, people often point increased energy, clearer skin, improved digestion, and increased concentration.

Who should not try a detox diet?

Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children, anemic people, people with eating disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid, autoimmune diseases, cancer, terminal illness, certain genetic diseases and other chronic conditions should not try the detox diet.

Side effects

One of the most common side effects are headache accompanied by cough within the first few days of conducting detox diet. Other side effects include diarrhea, which may lead to dehydration and loss of electrolytes. Constipation can also appear if increased amounts of fiber are consumed and without adequate amounts of fluid intake. Side effects may be fatigue, nervousness, weight loss and hunger.

If a detox diet is practiced for a long time, it may result in a deficit of nutrients  especially protein and calcium.

During detox avoid the following foods:

fast food

coffee, alcohol and cigarettes


sweetened juices and soft drinks

food with high fat content

sweets and snacks

canned meals

foods that contain wheat and gluten

The seven-day detox plan

IMMEDIATELY after getting up; Drink a glass of warm water to which you previously squeezed half a lemon

Before bedtime; glass of water with one tablespoon of Bentonite clay and a teaspoon of ground flaxseed

FIRST DAY; You can eat any fruit except bananas. Recommended are apples, pears, tangerines, oranges, grapefruit and kiwi. Fruit, fresh or canned, will provide all the necessary nutrients to the body .

SECOND DAY; You can eat all kinds of vegetables, raw or cooked, in amounts that you want . For dinner prepare one large potato baked in the oven with a piece of butter. Vegetables will give you all the necessary nutrients and fiber.

THIRD DAY; You can eat all kinds of fruits and vegetables, except bananas and potatoes, in desired quantities . Do not be surprised if you have a craving because the next day it will begin to fade .

DAY FOUR; Today you can eat up to eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk, and vegetable soup is allowed. Bananas are used to compensate potassium and sodium that are lost.

DAY FIVE; you can eat up to 600 gr of beef and six tomatoes. Increase water intake. From the beef you get iron and protein, and vitamins and fibers from tomatoes.

SIXTH DAY; Beef and vegetables in unlimited quantities .

DAY SEVEN; Today you can eat brown rice, all kinds of vegetables and drink unsweetened fruit juice .

During the day, drink at least 10 glasses of water. Drink throughout the day also two cups of herbal tea (green tea, nettle, dandelion, mint ) with no sugar.
