The most common causes of headaches

Headache can be acute consequence of a less severe disorder, but also a symptom of a more serious disorder. Aromatherapy can be used at less frequent, mild headaches, but will not cure the cause of common, chronic or severe headache.

1. Eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus radiata)

Eucalyptus oil contains significant amounts of 1,8-cineole oxides. This compound has anti-inflammatory properties and stimulates the cleansing of the nasal mucosa. Thanks to this combination, eucalyptus oil is the most effective against headaches caused by inflammation of the sinuses.

2. Lavender oil (Lavandula)

Lavender has a high proportion of linalyl acetate and therefore has anti-inflammatory and calming effects. Lavender oil is best used in evening or night headaches, because it combines analgesic and hypnotic properties.

3. Roman chamomile oil(Chamaemelum nobile)

Roman chamomile is full of ester and has anti-inflammatory and sedative effects. It is the most recommended to very sensitive to people who have a “short fuse”. It has a soothing effect, and, like lavender oil, is the most useful against evening or night headaches.

4. Grapefruit oil (Citrus paradisi)

Grapefruit oil has the reputation of diuretics and cleansers. It is effective in headaches caused by frustration and feeling of guilt. Relieves pain by making clear the mind and reduces the need for quick gratification emotion.

5. Sandalwood oil (Santalum album)

Sandalwood soothes and relaxes the central nervous system and is optimal with headaches caused by mental tension, agitation and exhaustion. It gives inner strength, which clarifies the mind and brings peace of mind. Use it sparingly, because the sandal is on the list of endangered plants.

6. Peppermint oil (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint is rich in menthol. Menthol is known to relax the muscles and thus relieves headaches associated with tension.

It is particularly useful for headaches associated with digestive and liver problems. Although it has a relaxing effect on the physical level, stimulates the psyche, so do not use this oil before bedtime.

7. Spearmint oil (Mentha spicata)

Spearmint contains more menthol than peppermint and is even more effective for headaches. Some aromatherapists mix spearmint and peppermint, thereby achieving a more powerful therapeutic effect.

How to use essential oils

The most popular technique of applying essential oils for headache is massaging the temples, forehead and neck with some of these essential oils or their mixture.

Essential oils mixture for severe headaches

Fill two-thirds of a bottle with sweet almonds oil and add:

six drops of lavender oil (for headache)

twelve drops of mint oil (for headache)

six drops of clary sage oil (for anxiety)

six drops of chamomile oil (for insomnia)

Close the bottle ans shake it. Dribble a few drops of the mixture on your fingers and massage your temples and other sore places such as the forehead, the area between the eyebrows and on both sides of the nose. Massage gently.
